Winter in Windsor

Walking through Windsor in the crisp air of a blue-sky autumn day I stopped to watch people feeding the swans and other birds down by the river.  After such a hectic summer with the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, Windsor Horse Show, The London Olympics, Ascot Racing, Henley Regatta and all of the other attractions that makes Windsor so great, the pace of life has slowed somewhat and we have plenty of time to ponder over what to do in Winter in Windsor...

Besides lovely picturesque walks along the river watching the leaves finally turn and seeing an abundance of wildlife preparing for the cold season there are many exciting things to do;  Some great new shops are springing up - a sign that we are finally coming out of recession and there are definately about 5 more restaurants than last time I took a jaunt around Windsor with my camera.

Our favourite restaurant at the moment is Meimo on Peascod Street - a Moroccan and Mediterranean restaurant that has a nice ambience, good food and service.

A Farmer's market offering tasty olives, baklava, sweets and nuts was operated on the day I went up Peascod Street which is a regular sight in Windsor where the town is always buzzing whatever the season.

Christmas is especially exciting in Windsor with Reindeer Parades, open-air Carol Singing, the huge tree outside Windsor Castle and various street entertainment, warm mince pies, mulled wine.

The shops are now displaying wonderful Chrsitmas decorations and gifts - as I walked around looking for interesting things to photograph the huge Christmas tree was just being installed next to Queen Victoria's statue and a couple of chaps were playing a familiar tune on the bagpipes to show in the season...

This year's Panto is Jack and The Beanstalk at Theatre Royal Windsor - a great way to entertain the children and adults too!

So if you've been looking for an excuse to get to Windsor then go on... book a night or two in a lovely B&B - or stay for a week and book a self catering apartment - there is some good availability and low prices this Winter - enjoy a shopping trip, visit the Castle and dine out in style....

We look forward to seeing you there.....

Welcome to Windsor in 2012!

As London prepares to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games this year, Windsor will see some of the action itself as nearby Dorney lake hosts the Olympic rowing from 28th July to the 4th August.  The facilities at Dorney are first class and there is even a new footbridge being built from Windsor racecourse to the rowing complex - this is how the organisers want you to get there as access from the other side of the Thames is somewhat limited.

Whilst there will be much excitement in Windsor, some people may be fearful of large crowds and overly inflated prices and whilst most establishments may charge a premium during the Olympic Rowing week, a lot of the action will be in London the rest of the time so don't worry unnecessarily over this period as it will be business as usual for most.  Windsor is well prepared for extra visitors and many households are advertising their own homes as a place to stay to put up visitors.  If you haven't found somewhere to stay yet for the Olympic period take a look st http://www.staywindsor2012.co.uk/ - a new Olympic accommodation website for Windsor 2012!
